What usually happens before I write an article is I get a bug up my butt about something I saw or heard. I am a creature of habit.
I'm a fan of Rosie O'Donnell. I'm a fan of her ability to say what's on her mind no-holds bar. I watch The View and always seem to be sucked in to their "hot topics" debate, especially (things really start to get good around 1:12) when O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck start to turn red in the face. It's GOOD to debate!
The other day the two were at it again talking about the republican debates on Fox (I couldn't locate a video of it). Elizabeth proclaimed that she watched the debates (of course) and Rosie quickly quipped, "I didn't". And it was that simple statement which made me shake my head at Rosie.
I find it sad that she, as a woman who prides herself on being a fierce debater, wouldn't educate herself about the politics of the right wings - just as she educates herself on her side of the political spectrum. I thought she knew better. I'm still a fan of her, however, one slip up doesn't mean a total loss of respect, but I'm disappointed in her for not knowing better.
Whatever side your on, whatever issue you're discussing, isn't it better to know both sides before you head into debate? That would be like a defense lawyer not researching the avenues a prosecutor might go down during the trial, before the trial begins. It's like going into battle with no armor. The point of knowing opposite points-of-view is to , of course, expand your mind, but it is also a useful tool during debate because it allows you to find flaws in the other side's arguments.
I'm probably preaching to a major choir here, but I'm a staunch believer in educating yourself. Otherwise, we might all be voting based on "best looking."
I agree entirely, I don't bother discussing something with someone unless they can help me understand it first, then I obliterate them with my litigation-esque skills of debate!
I have to think that a pissing contest would've came first :-)
