An article about Knut the polar bear got me thinking... shocking, I know.
The article examines how the small, heart string plucking little dood has reintroduced the issues of global warming to millions around the world. Just by being born and subsequently abandoned by his mother the fluffy baby is now the poster child of the global warming campaign; exposed by, but not single-handedly created by Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".
So, back to my thinking. Why would a BABY bear evoke such emotion? When surely most of us at least felt a pang of sadness when the animated ADULT polar bear kept trying with all of its might to crawl atop an iceberg, but couldn't because supposedly global warming has made icebergs unstable and breakable under a the weight of a polar bear. The scene played out in Gore's movie and was replayed time and time again in the media....because it reaches most humans on an emotional level.
The only clip I could find of the
polar bear scene was in a YouTube creation that is anti-Al Gore, but you get the idea.
How many stories have we seen in the media that portray children or small animals as victims, and how many of those news stories have provoked action? We, as humans, are naturally inclined to help the helpless and I think it's about time we help the helpless while helping ourselves.
The only damage we could do in helping every Knut out there is providing a world where polar bears thrive and take over.... but I digress. Can't you see? This is a win-win situation here. Do
your part in stopping global warming and we'll not only save all baby Knut, but we'll also save the planet which happen to call home.
Earth Day is on April 22nd, 2007. If a Knut can save the world, so too can you.
And just in case you need more reasons to save the planet.
